Working out the open garden area you have

The open garden area you have will help determine what you can produce. Knowing how big the area is will help you use the available are more effectively.

Of course, the simplest is a square or rectangular area, where length multiplied by width will give you a quick answer. However, more irregular shapes can be a bit tricky.

The best way to work out the area of an odd-shaped garden is to sub-divide it into a series of rectangles and triangles. Work out the area of each piece and then just add them all together.

Any triangular areas can be calculated by multiplying the base by the height and then dividing by 2.

This process of sub-dividing the garden area can actually be quite useful. Make sure you choose the smallest number of sub-divisions and then see if it would make things easier to work the garden in these separate sections. If you have not yet read our information on Garden Aspect, that may help you decide how to organize your open garden area.
