When caring for chickens' health, start with their environment

Caring for chickens is more a case of prevention rather than cure. It is not enough to simply feed them and give them somewhere to roost. Chickens are highly domesticated and cannot adequately care for themselves without human assistance. In short, they need the support of caring people throughout their lives.

Chickens need our care throughout their lives. For proper "Free Range" care you should consider:

  • Clean housing that is not too crowded and provides adequate laying and roosting facilities
  • Access to grass, ideally as much as the birds like throughout the day
  • The ability to scratch the ground, perch and shelter in shrubs or small trees
  • Be able socialize naturally with other birds without being stressed by overcrowding or environmental conditions
  • Be protected from attack and harassment by predators both on the ground and from the air
  • Easy access to clean water, food and grit throughout the day
  • Receive positive stimuli from their environment and carers that further reduce stress and improve the birds' quality of life.
