The Food Gardener for -- How does your garden grow? September 28, 2010 |
December 2008 - Issue:004 This E-zine is for anyone interested in producing healthy organic food from their home garden. If you know someone who may be interested in receiving The Food Gardener, then simply Forward this email to them. If you have been sent this by a friend and like it, they can subscribe here. Facts About Solar EnergyThe big news this week is that we have opened a new section on solar energy and other energy alternatives. This may not seem like a strictly gardening subject, but if you are food gardening to help build a healthier home environment for your family, then you may also be interested in at least increasing your household energy efficiency and perhaps even being able to unplug from the grid. However, there are also other reasons to look at energy options. If you have a greenhouse for plants you are growing outside their normal climate range, or have an interest in either aquaculture or aquaponics, solar energy is a good way to keep costs down and increase your level of self-sufficiency. You can find our new Solar Energy page here. Composting TimeNow is also the time (at least for us in the Southern Hemisphere) to start thinking about getting the compost heap started again. If so, you may like to review our page on organic composting. However, after using different composting methods over the years, I have sometimes found problems with weeds, soil stagnation and even crop failures. These sent me back to re-think the whole subject and my first step was to begin with the method I knew produced the very highest quality compost - the Biodynamic method of composting. If you would also like to try this, here is an e-book that is very helpful and easy to follow. More About SoilIf you have gone through our Healthy Soil section, you will probably have found it much more detailed than others you may have found elsewhere, but I have still found a demand for even more information - especially for unusual situations like Truffle production and agro-forestry. Since this goes beyond what most gardeners will need, I have started a new site dedicated entirely to soil management. I still have a lot of work to do on it, but if you are interested to know more about your soil, you are welcome to visit The-Living -Soil.comWhy Not Pay It Forward?Don't forget that we now also have a number of pages where you can share your own food gardening experiences with others, or "pay it forward" by adding comments to items that others have submitted. Below is a list of links to the currently available pages, but keep an eye out, because we will be adding more subject categories soon.
